Baptism By Water

When someone is ready to ask God’s forgiveness for sins and accept Jesus as their Savior, it’s time for them to be baptized. The process for baptizing someone includes making some preparations ahead of time. When you are both in the water, you’ll slowly say the confession of faith in phrases and let the person repeat after you. Then you’ll bless them and lower them into the water. When you raise them back up, it represents Christ rising from the dead and the person gaining a new life.

Why Be Baptized?

Why do we get Baptized - Here are the 5 reasons!

1. It Is a Public Profession of Your Faith

“Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them.”—Acts 2:41

In scripture, those who receive the Gospel by faith were baptized. This verse in Acts 2 was a report of what happened at Pentecost. It was a moment when many publicly professed their belief in Jesus as the Messiah. In scripture, salvation and baptism went together.

Baptism is a powerful way to publicly declare your faith in Jesus.

2. Jesus Commanded It

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’”—Matthew 28:18-20

The Great Commission is to “go and make disciples of all the nations.” Jesus commanded His followers to go, makebaptize and teach.

We shouldn’t take lightly the instructions Jesus gave us. These instructions—the Great Commission—were given so that others would understand the freedom available to them in Christ and more would be added to His family.

Our acceptance of Jesus should provoke a response to declare our changed lives publicly and to be on mission to tell others about Him.

3. It Reminds You of Your New Identity

“In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses…”—Colossians 2:11-13

Baptism is a reminder of your new identity in Jesus. It is an act that symbolizes who you are. You put off the sins of the flesh and bury them in baptism. Coming out of the water symbolizes you are spiritually alive and are forgiven. You are a new creation in Christ.

4. It Reminds You to Turn Away from Sin

“There is also an antitype which now saves us—baptism (not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God), through the resurrection of Jesus Christ…”—1 Peter 3:21

Baptism is a reminder of how God wants you to have a repentant lifestyle. In other words, it is an act that reminds you to continually turn from sin and turn toward God. It symbolizes your commitment to pursue holiness and be used by God.

Just as a wedding day reminds a husband and wife of their commitment to each other, and their vows remind them of their promises, baptism holds a similar reminder. It reminds you that you have been set apart and promise to be used by God for “every good work” (2 Timothy 2:20-22).

5. It Unites the Body of Christ

“For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”—Galatians 3:26-29

Baptism unites the Body of Christ from across the world. It is an act that says, “We are all one in Jesus.” It expresses the union you, as well as other Christians, have with Christ.
